Summary Statement on Impeachment of GW Bush
3/9/06
One of the biggest differences between a Democratically elected President and a dictator is that the citizens can impeach their President. When a president spies on his people, lies to them and leads them into illegal and unjustified wars then the people need not simply suffer. The people can, and must, impeach that President in order to protect their Democracy.
Bush claims that he was misled by faulty intelligence into thinking we needed to invade Iraq. But there is overwhelming evidence that he knew the intelligence was faulty and actually manipulated that intelligence in order to fool Congress and the public. Bush's Iraq War violated US laws against fraud and lying to the Congress, and violated the the UN Charter and Nuremberg Charter.
These crimes of war, along with the illegal wiretaps, torture of prisoners, and abuses of the justice system are greater justification for impeachment than we have had for any past impeachment.
The Congress is not calling for impeachment because it is controlled by Republicans who support the President's illegal policies. Out of frustration many cities and counties are now passing impeachment resolutions. This groundswell of impeachment activity will hopefully force the Congress to vote for impeachment. If Congress votes against impeachment then the one who vote no will have identified themselves as complicit in these crimes.
