The Republicans are desperate to retain their majority in Congress in the 2006 election. Karl Rove is hinting that there may be an "October Surprise" that will tilt the election in the Republican's favor. What could that surprise be? Here are some guesses. Which one do you think will really happen?
- Maybe Bush will capture Osama Bin Laden. He has been talking lately of sending troops into Pakistan to do just that.
- Maybe an "incident" with Iran will force the US to bomb military and nuclear sites in Iran. [Pat Buchanan] Bush has ordered a Navy "strike group" to head for the Persian Gulf on October 1st. [Lindorff]
- Maybe Bush will uncover a new terrorist plot to attack America. Bush will use wiretaps and torture in the investigation proving that they are critical tools for protecting America.
- Maybe Al Qaeda will issue a taped warning of threats against America. The tape will verbally attack Bush and the Republicans, which will help them in the election. It worked before...
- Maybe a US mercenary force will attack a US owned oil facility in Venezuala. This will be blamed on the government of Hugo Chavez. US troops will be deployed to protect facilities in Venezuala and "need our support".
- 10/14/06 - RM suggests "Maybe the price of gas will suddenly drop 30-60 cents per gallon, with no logical explaination, and be credited to the Bush administration (watch it go up again right after the elections.)"
- 10/30/06 JB suggests "Weapons of mass destruction will miraculously appear in Iraq.".
- Maybe a US ship will attempt to search a North Korean ship for banned weapons. They will naturally refuse and be fired upon, triggering an escalating conflict. Due to the chaos Bush will "postpone" the election to some later date.
- Maybe, despite the Democrats' strong lead in the polls, the Republicans mysteriously come out ahead on election night. Widespread complaints of voter intimidation, rigged voting machines, and lost ballots wil be ignored by the press. A recount wil be impossible because electronic voting machines leave no paper trail. The Republicans will accuse the Democrats of being sore losers, declare themselves winners and keep their majority in Congress. Surprise!
