HOW TO get a Resolution Passed in your City or County

Citizens can ask their cities or counties to pass impeachment resolutions. These resolutions can then be sent in the form of a "petition" to the Speaker of the US House.

  1. Gather a bunch of friends and neighbors who are interested in impeachment. Or meet with local activist and peace groups to see if they are interested.
  2. Review the recommended City resolution. You can download it as a Word document and modify it for your city.
  3. Review the arguments for impeachment, and the talking points, and be prepared to answer questions.
  4. Identify, if possible, a progressive council member and share your plan with them.
  5. Find out the schedule for the next meeting of the town council or county supervisors meeting. Ask supporters to show up at the meeting.
  6. Poll member of the city council to see if they support impeachment. Be prepared to use the talking points if they think Bush did not commit any crimes.
  7. Circulate petitions for people in your city or county to sign urging passage of your resolution.
  8. Print out a copy of the instructions for submitting a "petition" to the US House.
  9. Attend the city or county meeting. Ask permission and read the resolution. Deliver any citizen petitions you have collected. Ask your city or county to adopt the resolution. You might suggest that they hold a secret "paper" ballot because some folks do not want to go on record opposing an administration that suppresses dissent.
  10. Take pictures of the meeting for the newspaper.
  11. Give them a copy of the page "HOW TO send the Resolution to Congress (for City, County or State Officials)".
  12. If they pass the resolution, please let us know details (who, what, why, where, when) so we can post the news.
  13. Contact your local newspaper and tell them the story. Be prepared to questions from the press in case the story is picked up on a wider scale.
