8/6/06 - North Jersey Impeach Group + Statewide Campaign to Impeach
The North Jersey Paterson/Wayne Impeach Group began as a meet up group, and when meet up started charging, we became a yahoo group (at no charge). Our first collective effort was to collect petitions to impeach the Bush gang. A year later, we have 65 members of whom about 20 are regularly active.
August 3rd we bought our own domain, impeachthem.com
We participated in the National Impeach Teach-In event in July, when we showed the CCR's excellent 30-minute dvd HOW TO IMPEACH. At the end of the event, our crowd decided the time is right to pursue a campaign to get our state legislature to pass A Resolution to Impeach, and we further decided to employ the CCR's language, because it offers the most palatable form and content of all the impeachment resolutions we studied.
Personally, I loved the National Lawyers' Guild version, but we are not working to make a statement, we're working to achieve success, to win. The CCR resolution is most likely to bring success.
In our state the disapproval of Bush is at 70% --- we're in the majority by a landslide. We have asked the CCR and the ACLU-NJ for counsel on our campaign, plus we have an attorney with a progressive law firm in Newark assisting us. We initiated a letter to the editor campaign, and we even ran a classified ad ("FED UP YET?..."). We're going to contact every legislator in the state, Senate and Assembly, and we're seeking progressive legislators to spearhead our campaign in the political arena.
We find a pronounced increase in the number of newcomers to the impeach movement --- people who have never before involved themselves in poltical organizing and action. It's a great, encouraging development. It should be of great interest to everyone that these people are the most open to coming up with creative ideas to push impeachment, and they're unafraid of political consequences. They're not timid.
Surprise. The hardest task so far is getting the dozens of progressive/liberal groups throughout New Jersey to actually walk on common ground, face the same direction, work on the same page. There are still many people -- veteran organizers, many of them -- who seem to think boarding the impeachment bandwagon somehow hurts their primary work trying to stop the war.
It's very discouraging that so many who lived through the Vietnam war era are sucked in by the notion that expanding the political context somehow destroys their antiwar work. When you remind these people that Martin Luther King was attacked when he announced his opposition to the Vietnam war, and people said he hurt the civil rights movement, history shows that political policies of exclusion hurt the efforts to achieve progressive goals, and slow the achievement of progressive efforts altogether.
This has got to cease. As progressives love to preach about the enemy, "one day those leaders better get out of the way and let the people move forward." Now those words apply best to the organized "establishment" liberal and progressive operations.
We ask all like-minded organizations in New Jersey to join an ad hoc coalition dedicated to passage of the Resolution to Impeach in our state's legislature, which will then force the issue in the U.S. House of Representatives. This is do-able in our garden state. New Jersey is ripe for this, and we can expect support from some organized labor as well.
